A long-term geosphere stability for geological disposal is evaluated by the past geological environmental changes and modern conditions. Stable hydrogen and oxygen isotope ratios ($$delta$$D, $$delta$$$$^{18}$$O) of geological samples are useful information to estimate the past environmental changes and modern conditions. Recently, the thermal conversion elemental analyzer and isotope ratio mass spectrometer (TC-EA/IRMS) were installed in the Tono Geoscience Center for $$delta$$D and $$delta$$$$^{18}$$O measurements of geological samples. In this study, we reported analytical methods of $$delta$$D and $$delta$$$$^{18}$$O using international standard reference materials. In addition, evaluation tests of uncertainty by repeated analyses of the standards were performed using the TC-EA/IRMS. Furthermore, the $$delta$$D and $$delta$$$$^{18}$$O analyses by the TC- EA/IRMS were also applied to fault rock samples.

Structural investigation of simulated waste glass surface drained in operation confirmation test of 3rd TVF glass melter

To reduce the risks posed by stored the high-level radioactive liquid waste (HAW), Tokai Vitrification Facility (TVF) is working to produce the HAW into vitrified bodies. With the aim of steady vitrification of HAW in TVF, the vitrification technology section has manufactured a new 3rd melter with an improved bottom structure and is working to verify the performance of this melter. In this study, solidified glass samples were taken from simulated vitrified bodies produced by flowing molten glass during the bottom drain-out test in the operation confirmation of the TVF 3rd melter. And the properties of the surface layer and fracture surface of the vitrified bodies were evaluated by using Raman spectroscopy, synchrotron radiation XAFS measurement, and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (LA ICP-AES) analysis. As a result of measuring the surface layer and fracture surface of the solidified samples produced on an actual scale, a slight difference was confirmed between the properties of the surface layer and those of the fracture surface. Since the chemical composition of these simulated vitrified bodies does not contain platinum group elements, it is expected that the glass structure of solidified glass samples is different from that of the actual vitrified body. However, this sample measuring was a valuable opportunity to evaluate samples produced by using the direct energized joule heating method. The properties of cullet used the operation confirmation of the TVF 3rd melter and the cullet of another production lot were measured and analyzed in the same manner under the measuring conditions of solidified glass samples. As a result, it was confirmed that cullet with different producing histories have different glass structures even with the same chemical composition, and that differences in glass structures remain in the glass samples after melting these cullet.

Considerable efforts have been devoted to the decommissioning of the TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (1F) and now the retrieval of fuel debris is being proceeded on a trial basis. It can be said that the succession of science and technology related to debris, that is, human resource development, is important and indispensable. For that reason, we thought that a specific textbook on decommissioning is necessary. Regarding the 1F fuel debris, we still do not know enough, and it would be difficult to describe the details. However, 12 years have passed since the accident, and we have come to understand the situation of 1F to a certain extent. At this stage, it is essential for future development to organize the current situation by combining examples of past severe accidents. Therefore, we presented in this book the current state of fuel debris chemistry research from the perspectives of solid chemistry, solution chemistry, analytical chemistry, radiochemistry, and radiation chemistry.

Development of analytical techniques for isotopic composition determination of uranium particles in environmental sample for safeguards with Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry

Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) is the method to detect secondary ions produced by the sputtering of primary ions. SIMS is one of effective method to measure isotopic composition of particles containing nuclear material in environmental sample for safeguards. We are a group member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)'s network of analytical laboratories and have developed analytical techniques using SIMS and other mass spectrometers for nuclear safeguards. We will introduce the principle of SIMS and analytical techniques developed by our group to measure isotopic composition of uranium particles which having a particle diameter of micron order in environmental sample for safeguards.

Formation of high-quality SiO$$_{2}$$/GaN interfaces with suppressed Ga-oxide interlayer via sputter deposition of SiO$$_{2}$$

While the formation of an GaO$$_{x}$$ interlayer is key to achieving SiO$$_{2}$$/GaN interfaces with low defect density, it can affect the reliability and stability of metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) devices if the annealing conditions are not properly designed. In the present study, we aimed to minimize the growth of the GaO$$_{x}$$ layer on the basis of the sputter deposition of SiO$$_{2}$$ on GaN. Synchrotron radiation X-ray photoelectron spectrometry measurements confirmed the suppressed growth of the GaO$$_{x}$$ layer compared with a SiO$$_{2}$$/GaN structure formed by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition. Negligible GaO$$_{x}$$ growth was also observed when subsequent oxygen annealing up to 600$$^{circ}$$C was performed. A MOS device with negligible capacitance-voltage hysteresis, nearly ideal flat-band voltage, and low leakage current was demonstrated by performing oxygen and forming gas annealing at temperatures of 600$$^{circ}$$C and 400$$^{circ}$$C, respectively.

The gamma-ray measurement part of the Non-Destructive Assay (NDA) course of safeguards and nuclear material accountancy was developed to focus on gamma-ray measurement allotting two days out of five days. The lectures on the basic characteristics and detection methods and mechanism of gamma-ray detectors were provided as e-learnings which were developed. The part for hands-on exercises were implemented in JAEA facility. Participants have set up each gamma-ray detector, and performed measurements of uranium and the other gamma-ray emitting nuclides. Also, uranium-235 enrichment measurements have been performed. In addition, the participants trained with a handheld gamma-ray spectrometer, HM-5, that is popular for IAEA safeguards as the preparation in the measurement exercise of fresh fuel assemblies in JRR-3, a research reactor facility of JAEA. This paper reports on the development, implementation, and feedback from participants on gamma-ray measurement part of the NDA course.

"The 34th Meeting for Tandem Accelerators and their Associated Technologies" was held on July 21-22, 2022 organized by Nuclear Science Research Institute of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency. This meeting was held only on-line for preventing the spread of COVID-19 infection. The purpose of this meeting is contribution of development for related technology and of management of facilities through exchange of information among the researchers and engineers using and operating electrostatics accelerator facilities like tandem accelerators. There were 25 presentations which contains current status report of facility, technical development of accelerator, research of application. The total number of participants was a hundred, from 26 universities, research organizations and industries. This meeting consisted of only oral session, a poster session was not carried out because of on-line meeting. This proceeding compiles the contents of report papers in the meeting.

This paper addresses reaction products and their distribution of the eutectic melting/solidifying reaction of boron carbide (B$$_{4}$$C) and stainless-steel (SS). The influence of the existence of carbon on the B$$_{4}$$C-SS eutectic reaction was investigated by comparing the iron boride (FeB)-SS reaction by Raman spectroscopy with Multivariate Curve Resolution (MCR) analysis. The scanning electron microscopy with dispersive X-ray spectrometer was also used to investigate the elemental information of the pure metals such as Cr, Ni, and Fe. In the B$$_{4}$$C-SS samples, a new layer was formed between B$$_{4}$$C/SS interface, and the layer was confirmed that the formed layer corresponded to amorphous carbon (graphite) or FeB or Fe$$_{2}$$B. In contrast, a new layer was not clearly formed between FeB and SS interface in the FeB-SS samples.

Doppler-free ablation fluorescence spectroscopy of Ca for high-resolution remote isotopic analysis

To develop remote isotopic analysis for the nuclids with small isotope shifts, Doppler-free fluorescence spectroscopy of Ca was performed using laser ablation plume. Counter-propagating laser beams from two external cavity diode lasers were used to irradiate the plume in order to excite the ground-state Ca atoms to the $$^{1}$$D$$_{2}$$ state through a double resonance scheme of $$^{1}$$S$$_{0}$$ $$rightarrow$$ $$^{1}$$P$$_{1}$$ $$rightarrow$$ $$^{1}$$D$$_{2}$$. Subsequently, we measured fluorescence spectra associated with the relaxation from the $$^{1}$$D$$_{2}$$ to $$^{1}$$P$$_{1}$$ states. The linewidth measured at 1 ms delay after ablation under helium gas pressure of 70 Pa was found to be less than 70 MHz, which was about 1/30 of the linewidth of the Doppler-limited fluorescence spectrum. A broad Gaussian pedestal was observed at less than 600 micro-second delay in the temporal variation in fluorescence spectra, and it was most likely due to the velocity-changing collision. Additionally, the pressure broadening rate coefficient for the second-step $$^{1}$$P$$_{1}$$$$rightarrow$$ $$^{1}$$D$$_{2}$$ transition was determined to be 46.0 MHz/torr from the spectra measured under various gas pressures. We evaluated analytical performances such as linearity of the calibration curve, limit of detection, and measurement accuracy using fluorescence signals of three naturally occurring Ca isotopes (i.e., $$^{40}$$Ca, $$^{42}$$Ca, and $$^{44}$$Ca). The limit of detection of isotopic abundance was estimated to be 0.09% from the 3-sigma criteria of the background. These results suggest that this spectroscopic technique is promising for remote isotopic analysis of nuclides with small isotope shifts.

Nanoscale structural analysis of ferroelectrics using pair distribution function

It is important to determine whether a sample is a single phase or not in order to improve the quality of ferroelectrics. Therefore, we have succeeded in developing a detection method for trace amounts of segregated phases by using two-body correlation distribution function (PDF) in addition to X-ray diffraction, which has been conventionally used to detect impurities. In the X-ray diffraction pattern of the BaTiO$$_3$$-BiFeO$$_3$$ solid solution, it appears as a single phase with a rhombohedral structure. However, when the PDF was calculated from the obtained diffraction pattern, it was found that not only the component derived from the rhombohedral crystal structure calculated from the average structure but also the BaTiO$$_3$$ component was mixed and segregated. By using PDF in this way, it has become possible to detect fine segregation phases on the order of nanoscale.

Immersion of graphene in KOH solution improves its mobility on SiO$$_{2}$$/Si wafers. This is thought to be due to electron doping by modification with K atoms, but the K atom concentration C$$_{K}$$ in the graphene has not been clarified yet. In this study, the C$$_{K}$$ was determined by XPS analysis using high-brilliance synchrotron radiation. The time evolution of C$$_{K}$$ was determined by real-time observation, and the C$$_{K}$$ before irradiation of synchrotron radiation was estimated to be 0.94%. The C 1s spectrum shifted to the low binding energy side with the desorption of K atoms. This indicates that the electron doping concentration into graphene is decreasing, and it is experimentally confirmed that K atoms inject electrons into graphene.

Development of an ion funnel reaction cell for suppression of isobaric interference in chrorin-36 dating

The measurement of chlorine-36 ($$^{36}$$Cl) in AMS, which is important for the dating of saline groundwater, is more difficult than other nuclides due to the isobaric interference by sulfur-36 ($$^{36}$$S). In general, acceleration voltages of 6 MV or higher are required to separate $$^{36}$$Cl and $$^{36}$$S. Therefore, this study aims to develop an ion funnel reaction cell and incorporate it into the low energy side of JAEA-AMS-TONO-5MV to selectively suppress $$^{36}$$S.

Frontiers of studies utilizing accelerator mass spectrometry in geoscience

The development of measurement and chemical separation techniques in the accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) method has enabled highly sensitive analysis of $$^{244}$$Pu (half-life 8.1$$times$$10$$^{7}$$ years), $$^{60}$$Fe (half-life 2.62$$times$$10$$^{6}$$ years), and $$^{90}$$Sr (half-life 28.9 years) in AMS. For example, the study analyzing $$^{244}$$Pu in ferromanganese crust samples successfully quantified $$^{244}$$Pu from outside the solar system, which had been hidden by $$^{244}$$Pu from nuclear tests. Furthermore, the research has revealed that $$^{244}$$Pu is produced in neutron star mergers, etc., leading to unraveling the production sites where the heavy elements originate. This topic highlights the frontline of studies on $$^{244}$$Pu, $$^{60}$$Fe, and $$^{90}$$Sr utilizing AMS.

Challenging studies by accelerator mass spectrometry for the development of environmental radiology; Status report on the analysis of $$^{90}$$Sr and $$^{135}$$Cs by AMS

Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) is an analytical method that combines mass spectrometry with a tandem accelerator, which has been used mainly in nuclear physics experiments. AMS is used to measure radionuclides with half-lives of 10$$^{3}$$-10$$^{8}$$ years. For radionuclides with half-lives of this order, the method of measuring their mass is 10$$^{3}$$-10$$^{6}$$ times more sensitive than measuring their activity. Because of this advantage, AMS has been widely applied in Earth and planetary sciences, atomic energy research, and other fields. Among the various studies, Wallner et al. (2021, 2016) have achieved excellent work in Earth and planetary sciences. For example, they have attained the ultra-sensitive analysis of $$^{60}$$Fe and $$^{244}$$Pu in environmental samples. These are radionuclides produced by rapid-neutron-capture (r-process) nucleosynthesis. Our recent work shows that a new AMS system (VERA, University of Vienna), which combines laser isobaric separation and a typical AMS system, has been successfully applied to the ultra-sensitive determination of $$^{90}$$Sr and $$^{135}$$Cs in environment. For $$^{90}$$Sr in environmental samples, the $$beta$$-ray measurement by the milking of the daughter nuclide $$^{90}$$Y is still the principal method, which takes 3-6 weeks. The new AMS method has a detection limit of $$<$$ 0.1 mBq, which is comparable to that of $$beta$$-ray measurement, with a more straightforward chemical treatment than $$beta$$-measurement. Our achievement demonstrates that AMS can be a practical new method for determining $$^{90}$$Sr in the environment.
